Overall, style of Curriculum vitae must be chosen very carefully as it plays a vital role in fetching attention of employers to specific parts of your career which might be crucial in the selection of individuals.
A very common global term which is associated with paid company jobs is รข€˜Curriculum vitae' or CV. No matter in which country you apply for the job, you will have to submit hard and/ or soft copy of your CV. This is a detailed resume which portrays a complete formal image of an individual in the front of employers.
Not only in the job field, but it also plays an important role in other applications like for education, scientific post, fellowship and grant applications. As the objective of CV fluctuates in a wide range, its style also differs a lot. Three most common internationally accepted forms of CV are described below with brief overviews.
Chronological CV
This is a type of CV in which complete employment & an experience record of the individual is presented in a particular order, mainly from beginning to end. This form of CV is commonly used when one has a strong employment record. However, it has its own pros & cons.
Pros
* Highlight the employment record from starting
* Employers prefer to see CV in this format as it gives them a clear idea how valuable employee is for them
* Offers accurate image of your personality & provide a way to judgment if you are fit for the job.
Cons
* Emphasize on gaps in job period, presenting flaws in skills
* Not fit if you are applying for a job outside your field, that is, if you want to change career
* Not good for those who are fresher & want to apply for the job first time.
Functional CV
This style of Curriculum vitae is designed for those who are applying for any job for the first time, or after a long gap in job period. This is because it highlights the skills & qualification of the individual, instead of work experience.
Pros
* Focus on qualification & skills, work experience is for side benefits
* Remove attention of employers from unstable work history.
* Portray an image of individual as skilled person not as experienced one
Cons
* Might not be good for a job where experience is required
* Does not have continuity or formal order
* Removes consistency of work
* Not fit for those who have a strong recent work history as an employer will like to hire a person who has experience.
Hybrid CV
As both the style of Curriculum vitae has certain demerits of their own, their combination is widely used to fill up the holes. This style is a combination of chronological & functional CV and emphasize on work history & skills in a balanced way to present the best possible image.
Pros
* Focus on experience, skills & qualification
* Bring achievement in quick focus
* Can be modified to highlight required parts of the career
Cons
* Can be longer, more than 4 to 5 pages
* Work history is often at the second page and many employers do not read that far
* Can't be made shorter as it has to include both components
